The Skinny About Me

Painting was a hobby I tried out one summer.  I settled on acrylics based solely upon finances and the fact that I knew could paint over anything that didn’t turn out.  I had never painted before and wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into.  More than anything, I was looking for a post-college hobby, something to interest me.  I painted rarely, maybe once ever few months when I found the right “mood”.  In January 2008, I set out to force myself to paint more often.  For the first time, I documented (of sorts) what I was doing.  I experimented as much as I could and tried my best to cope with the continual failures of the process.  I may have painted over 20 different things in 2008.  In January 2009, I set out to paint 40 works (a number arrived at based upon my earlier year’s work and a reduction of the weeks in a year).  In July 2009, I started this blog, as a motivator to help push me to my goal, and to allow some of my friends to see a little more of the process behind my work.  I rounded out 2009 with 43 works, plus about a dozen shirts I’d painted.

I don’t really have any set goals for 2010, like I had the last two years.  I’m not sure what purpose this blog will serve.  I don’t get many visitors.  I’d like to think that it would give someone a few steps behind me, an opportunity to avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made trying to figure out how to paint, but I don’t think I don’t think it has served this purpose.  So, I’ll just do my best to keep up with the painting and documenting it.

I work in acrylic, primarily upon canvas and t-shirt.  I’m entirely self taught.  I live in Portland.  Feel free to shoot me any questions.

  3. First time I’ve come to the blog, but since my departure last May, I haven’t really had a chance to catch up with you or your art. Thank you for the tips you post, some of us newbies could really use the help. Hope to see more posted soon.
